Enormous changes have taken place at Packington Somers over the past couple of years which have made the fishing even better at this well established former gravel pit complex in the heart of the Green Belt
'Meriden Gap' between Birmingham and Coventry.
|
 |
 |
|
All-in-all, Packington offers fishing on six pools, four smaller ponds created from part of the former Molands Mere when it was re-shaped and a one-mile stretch of the River Blythe.
Perhaps the most noticeable change to have been made to keep pace with the demands of modern anglers is at Molands Mere, which has been redesigned from a specimen gravel pit fishery into a modern match
and pleasure complex with a central island.

 |
|
Molands now boasts a 60-peg match pool and five attractive smaller pools which are reserved exclusively for pleasure anglers.
Another change is removal of the former green portacabins which have been replaced with a purpose-built fishing lodge which incorporates a tackle shop, cafe and toilets for both able-bodied and disabled visitors. The
lodge is permanently manned and serves everything required for a good day's angling from hot and cold drinks and refreshments to good advice, terminal tackle and baits!

Access around the fishery has been greatly improved and most of the pools now offer parking for members and disabled anglers who can drive into the fishery and park in the waterside car parks on
production of a disability badge.
Match bookings are available on Gearys (minimum 20 pegs), Molands, Little Gearys and Gratuities. The other pools are for pleasure angling only.

Molands Mere

The redesigned Molands Mere has 60 pegs for match and pleasure anglers. Still the largest of the Packington waters, the redevelopment involved levelling the bottom of the old pool, which was 18 feet deep
in places, to a more favourable average of seven feet. A large island was created along the centre of the lake to provide more features and to encourage the use of all the main angling methods, the water
now being suitable for pole, feeder and waggler fishing. All swims are at least 25 metres across.

In the first year after the rennovation the record match weight was 58lbs but many pleasure anglers reported bags of tench, carp and bream in excess of 100lbs. The current record match weight stands at
over 100lbs and was taken on the feeder and consisted mainly of tench and a few carp.
The predominant species are carp and tench with the carp running to 15lbs and the tench to 7lbs. Molands also holds good heads of bream, roach, crucian carp and perch.
Access is good with a circular roadway around the pool and pathways to all pegs making the water popular with disabled anglers. Also, with at least 15 yards between each peg this is a 'comfortable' venue
to fish.

These four smaller ponds have been developed along the entrance side of Molands Mere and offer good sport with decent sized tench, carp, crucian carp, rudd, roach and perch. With plenty of trees, shrubs,
reeds and lilies, these intimate pools hold a maximum of six anglers and are ideal for pleasure anglers wanting a spot of solitude but offer excelllent sport and are well worth a visit.
